0:03 Hello, in this video we're gonna very quickly create some cross-functional pods. Uh, so in this demo scenario I have, we can see we have some teams, some functional teams, we've got our marketing design, product, and engineering teams that we're gonna use to make a pod, like a product development pod
0:21 . Um, so in functionally we have the concept of positions, which are what you can see here, and that's like somebody's official position.
0:28 Um, you also have the concept of roles, which are the different hats. people wear within an organization. So position might be what you expect to find in someone's contract and then the roles more accurately reflect all of the different work that gets done within the organization.
0:43 So I'm sure you can think of people within your organization who are doing things that aren't technically in their job description.
0:50 So to get started, we're first going to create a group for our pods. So if we hover between these two or design on our product groups here, we can see that a little internote menu appears so we can add a position or we can click on the ellipsis three dots below and we can add a boundary.
1:08 So I'm going to add a boundary and call that odds and we'll start by adding roles to people. So to accurately reflect the work that's getting done and to do this we need to change the lens from positions here to roles.
1:23 So a lot of role for everybody who's going to be in our pod, we've got our product manager who's going to lead the creation of the product.
1:30 You can see it's drawing on functionally's inbuilt libraries here, but you can add your own names in as well. And you don't have to, you can just hit return, and it will create your own roles in there.
1:41 So we'll add one product manager, one full stack engineer, back end engineer, and we'll add one front end engineer. And then we're going to add one designer and we'll add a product marketing specialist as well.
2:07 So the first thing to do is to add the leaders of our pods and the way to do this is by clicking on the role on their position.
2:15 So we'll click on Alfredo's role and drag it into our pod. So now Alfredo's the first person in there and we'll drag our designer in tie.
2:26 And so we can see tie is now below Alfreda and is reporting to her in a dotted line structure for the purposes of creating this product.
2:36 Then we're going to add our full stack engineer and we want them to be at the the same level as ties so we can see they're both leading up to Alfreda but I'm actually going to change the hierarchy of this so that it appears vertically rather than horizontally so that it's a bit more compact.
2:51 So I'll just use the little rotate button that you can see here to do that or you can also use the ellipses underneath Elfrada and then change layout.
3:02 So we'll also add in our backend engineer and our front end engineer and then we'll add in our product marketer, excuse me, in the same way just by dragging and dropping.
3:18 Now you'll notice that they all have different colors and And the roles take the native color from the position itself, so I've given my functional areas different colors so that when we look at this, we can see what they're easily discerned the difference between the functional areas.
3:35 Now, it's a one-to-one relationship between roles and secondary reporting lines. So for example, if we wanted tie to work in another pod, we would have to add a second designer role for him and drag and drop that in there, because a free drag and drop this over here for Ty, then he's going to be removed
3:54 from his pod here. I hope this is helpful in how to create cross-functional teams. If you do have any questions, feel free to reach out to our support at www.functionally.com.
